Five Drives That Decide Where You Live in Halifax County

In this post
The light at exit 173 turns green at 6:41 on a Tuesday, and the line of trucks ahead of you rolls onto the ramp for I-95 south. One of them smells like pine. You will spend more mornings like this one than you will spend evenings in the backyard, and no listing photo will tell you whether the drive is bearable. In Halifax County, five drives do most of the work of deciding where people can live. Time them yourself before you write an offer.
1. I-95 south: the Rocky Mount commute
Exit 173 is the county’s main on-ramp, at Roanoke Rapids and Weldon, and I-95 south from there pays for a large share of the houses sold in this county. Rocky Mount is 40 miles away, about 52 minutes at normal speeds. Keep going and Raleigh is 87 miles, roughly an hour and forty minutes.
The interstate matters because it does not slow down the way the two-lanes do. In a hard rain, the farm roads drop to a crawl while the four-lane holds its time. If your job is in Rocky Mount, or anywhere along the US-64 corridor past it, Roanoke Rapids and Weldon sit inside a real commuting radius, and most of the rest of this county does not.
Two things to check on this drive: how far the house sits from the interchange, and which side of it. The eastern side of Roanoke Rapids hears the interstate at night with the windows open. Ask the seller how it sounds at 2 a.m., then go stand in the yard after dark.
Enfield is in the county’s low corner at exit 154 on NC-481, and it is 19 miles and about half an hour from Rocky Mount. That is the shortest interstate commute in Halifax County. What it is not is close to the hospital. ECU Health North, the 204-bed hospital in Roanoke Rapids, is a straight run north on I-95, and the map makes that look shorter than the drive feels in weather.
2. I-95 north: the Virginia line
North from Roanoke Rapids, Emporia, Virginia is 22 miles and about 28 minutes. Petersburg is 65 miles and around 74 minutes. Richmond is 86 miles, about an hour and forty minutes.
This is the drive for buyers whose work crosses the state line, and it comes with paperwork people think about late: two state tax systems and two DMVs, plus a Virginia income tax on work done there. North of the river the exits thin out fast, which is worth knowing if you are touring houses near the Halifax side of the line. That side is closer to the everyday errands.
Time this one at 7 a.m. rather than at noon. Truck traffic on I-95 north peaks before 9, and the long grade south of Emporia is where the slow ones bunch up.
3. US-301: the two-lane through the towns
US-301 runs the full length of North Carolina beside I-95, and in this county it passes through Weldon, Halifax, and Enfield. This is the road that explains the housing stock, because it was the main road before the interstate existed, and each town on it grew around a stop for travelers.
Drive it once for the drive itself. It is a two-lane with 35 and 45 mph limits through town centers and long straight stretches where you can pass. North of Halifax a set of curves surprises you the first time. When a crash or high water closes the interstate at the river, US-301 is the way around, and you want to have driven it once before you need it.
The honest trade-off is time. On a good day, US-301 through the towns costs you another fifteen minutes or so over the interstate for the same trip south, and on a bad day more. What it buys you is a house in Weldon, Halifax, or Enfield at a price the interstate towns have already outgrown. Weldon had 1,444 residents at the 2020 census. Halifax, the county seat, had about 170, which tells you how slowly inventory moves here.

4. US-158 west: Littleton and the lake end
Exit 173 is where US-158 crosses the interstate, and west of town it runs toward Littleton at the county’s western edge. Littleton is 15 miles from Roanoke Rapids, about 20 minutes, depending on which side of the river you start from. The second way west is NC-903 off exit 168.
Littleton sits right at the Warren County line on US-158, which is why a Littleton mailing address tells you almost nothing about which county a property is in. It also has the Food Lion on Eaton Ferry Road that serves the lake side, so the west end of this county is not a grocery desert.
The pitch for the lake end of Halifax County is simple. You can be at the hospital in twenty minutes and on the interstate in twenty minutes, with waterfront a few minutes past town. The cost is the road. US-158 and NC-903 are two-lane, farm equipment uses them, and the last stretch into Littleton at night is dark enough that you will want good headlights and a habit of watching the shoulders.
5. The eastern run to Ahoskie
East, the county narrows into farm country and the two-lane highways that connect it. Ahoskie is 47 miles and about 74 minutes. Suffolk is 80 miles, roughly an hour and forty-five minutes. Norfolk is 102 miles, about two hours and fifteen minutes.
Here is the honest part: Hampton Roads is not a daily commute from Halifax County. Two hours each way is a weekend trip, and buyers who tell me they will just drive to Virginia Beach have usually not timed it on a Friday evening. Do that before you commit to anything on this side of the county.
The same warning applies in the southeast. Scotland Neck is 42 miles and about an hour from Greenville, and from Roanoke Rapids the Greenville run is 82 miles. If your job is east of here, the house that fits you is not on the west end of this county, and the house that fits a lake buyer is not in Enfield.
What the drives tell you
Halifax County’s drive math runs through five roads and one river crossing, and the address that looks cheapest on paper is often the one with the longest daily drive. Before you offer, drive your actual commute at your actual start time on a weekday, windows down, so you hear the road. Then check the bus schedule, because the school buses run these two-lanes in the same window you will be driving them.
I measure these distances with OpenStreetMap road routing, which gives a normal-conditions estimate rather than a Tuesday morning. Treat the numbers as a starting point and the drive itself as the fact. Travis drives these five corridors every week, and he can tell you which ones hold their time and which ones do not. Call or text him at (252) 202-4945, or start with the Roanoke Rapids listings and the under-$150K filter to see where the price depth sits on each road.
